FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF WHEN SELECTING A CUSTOM HOME BUILDER
Considering building a new home or remodeling your existing home? Selecting the right custom home builder is the most important decision you can make. Ask yourself these five questions before making your decision.
Do you like the Builder? Building a custom home is a huge investment in time and resources. Make sure the builder you are working with appreciates that and works to exceed your expectations. It is important to take personality into account when making such a big decision.
Do you like the Builder’s work? All the personality in the world does not mean a thing if the builder’s work is not top notch. Selecting a company that produces quality work is paramount. Quality never goes out of style. Good workmanship stands up to scrutiny, and a good custom home builder will welcome questions and concerns and put you at ease.
Does the Builder have a good process? Finding a builder that provides impeccable customer service and a smooth process for completing your project will make for a great experience. Your Builder should be responsive, have an established selection process and make themselves available for meetings and questions. Additionally, will the builder have time to focus on your project or provide day-to-day supervision delegated to project managers and site supervisors? The importance of good communication skills cannot be overstated.
Does the Builder have good relationships with subcontractors? A home is only as good as the subcontractors doing the actual work. You should be able to ask who the subcontractors are, how long they have worked with the Builder, and how experienced they are in their field. A good custom builder will retain good, reliable, experienced subcontractors.
Does the Builder have a good reputation? You should thoroughly vet your custom builder before signing on. Ask for references and testimonials. Ask the builder’s references how they thought their building process went, if they encountered any issues, how the builder solved those issues and if they would build another house with that builder.
Building a custom home is likely your largest financial investment, and a very personal undertaking. When evaluating different builders, consider whether that builder will give you and your custom home the attention it deserves, and will not only build you a quality home, but make the experience an enjoyable one.

VICTORIA’S DESIGN CORNER: MIXED METALS
If you wait long enough, everything comes back in style. Brass and gold are back, but this is not the shiny brass of the 1980s. Today’s brass has a satin finish that is more understated and luxurious. And the look is all about mixing different metals and textures. As in our latest powder room design shown above, brass hues can be used to warm up white marble and grey tones. Don’t be afraid to introduce just one or two elements of brass, such as lighting or hardware to contrast with silvery finishes to create an eclectic look.
